Hotel Receptionist, UK?

Sister is asking this ...

Hiya,

I am 16, just finished school and looking for somewhere to work.

I either wanted to work in a florist or in a hotel as a receptionist. There are no local florists but there are lots of hotels in the city centre.

Using Google Maps I have drawn up a list of all hotels in the area and I'm going through each website, but some of them don't have a 'careers' section.

Can I still phone the booking number and ask if they have any vacancies?

Also, what is expected of a hotel receptionist?

Are the hours flexible as I'll be starting sixth form as of September but would like to continue working to pay my own way through life.

Thanks for any help.

Hotel Receptionist, UK?
Hotel receptionist well normally there are 3 shifts 7-3, 3-11, 11-7 ish!! the work itself is very front facing customer service, but dont be surprised if you get asked to help, out on housekeeping or other parts of hotel work to, It can be quite demanding sometimes but if you like dealing with people and talking you should do fine, Flexiblity depends on the employer, really you can expect to work on a 5 over 7 basis.
Reply:I think you can be a good hotel receptionist, If you are interested, you can just walk in into any good hotel in the city for an interview if there is any vacancy there. During the interview you can ask the interviewer all those questions you want to ask. Good Luck.
Reply:The best thing for you would probably be for you to print off your CV and hand them in at the hotel receptions with a covering letter saying you want to work there and why.

You need to have good person skills, be able to talk clearly, be confident on the phone etc etc etc
Reply:You need to ask to speak to their personnel or HR department I would guess, especially if it is part of a large group of hotels. If you want to get some experience, then offer to do some work shadowing members of staff - this may be a good way to get in. . .
Reply:an old friend was once a hotel receptionist a few years ago - i would say definately just call the hotel or pop in and ask if they have any vacancies - you dont know unless you ask! the worst they can do is say no, and you can always ask to leave your contact details so they can call you should a vacancy come up.

my friend used to work LONG hours and started VERY early in the morning - but if you are going to school and want to work part time then im sure if they want to hire you then they will compromise on the hours.

you would have to be good with people and have excellent customer service type skills. you would always have to have a smile on your face to welcome guests! oh and have a good telephone manner, and good organisational skills.

good luck!
